On August 28, +695 (YP), Pacal Votan, whose name meant "Shield the Great," died and was entombed in the Hall of Inscriptions at Palenque, a Mayan observatory in Meso-America. His tomb commemorated his achievment in establishing Plaenque, and the lid of his sarcophagus depicts him escaping from a demon below, ascending the "world tree" at the "Cross Roads" toward Quetzalcoatl (Kukulkan), the feathered serpent.
